How Are New Domain Extensions Ranking In Google?
Posted by Daniel Negari in Featured, gTLDs, Start Ups
Since launching .xyz, I’ve been asked this question countless times: can new domain extensions (also known as gTLDs) rank in Google? The question is not “will they rank higher”, but an even more basic, “is it even possible for the new gTLDs to appear in Google’s search results?”
The answer is YES. In fact, when combined with other search engine optimization tactics, your site on a new extension can rank extremely well.
In Google’s eyes, all domains are treated equally. A .com will not necessarily be favored over a .xyz or .College or any other domain extension for that matter. What is important to consider when trying to rank well, is acquiring keyword and relevant domains and putting up quality, and again, relevant content that includes those keywords.
A prime example of a high-performing .xyz site is Hooli, which recently launched on May 3 by the makers of the HBO series “Silicon Valley.” Within days of going live, hooli.xyz ranked first in Google for the term “hooli,” and outranked the show’s official website, the Wikipedia page, and even popular publications that have covered the show such as Business Insider, TechCrunch, and VentureBeat.
Global search engine advantages with .xyz domains
To illustrate the global search engine advantages with .xyz domains, we found some examples, which I’m excited to share with you. First, let’s look at Jagzzi.
Jagzzi is a Japanese online fashion and lifestyle magazine run by university students in Tokyo. It first launched in 2005 as jagzzi.com, but made the move to its exact-match .xyz domain last year.
Jagzzi.xyz not only ranks first for the term “jagzzi” in Japan’s Google (google.co.jp), but it also ranks first in Google in the US, regardless of the fact that the site’s content is entirely in Japanese.
Another great example is the UK-based nonprofit organization, Reall.
Originally homeless-international.org, this organization did a complete rebrand with a new name and new domain name. For the terms “reall,” as well as “homeless international,” reall.xyz ranks first in Google searches.
The bottom line is that because the availability of keyword .xyz domains is still extremely high, individuals and businesses have the opportunity to acquire these domains to build quality content on.
With a domain name from .xyz or another new gTLD, end users have the flexibility to establish and promote their brand, while also improving their visibility in search engine rankings. Carefully considering your domain name is a cost-effective, strategic business decision that can help you get found by your customers.
New gTLDs will rank in Google, assuming that you utilize keywords and domains related to your business. When supplemented with quality content on your site, your websites on a new domain extension will rank well on search engines.

Hello Daniel Negari, @ .XYZ
You are being slightly less than fair in your claims of ANY New Quasi-Derivative gTLDs being found in search engines. First OFF , All New Quasi-Derivative gTLDs prevalently NEED SEM coverage Desparately. Second OFF , the New Quasi-Derivative gTLDs will all be given contantly changing status due to INCESSANT ALGO CHANGES, at all Search Engines. This means All new Quasi-Derivatives gTLDs chances of being given Top ALGO Preference are slim to none. This along with many other Compatability problems (TURN-KEY INOPERABILITY Dysfunction) makes All New Quasi-Derivative gTLDs Terrible Online Marketing Strategies. I’ve noticed some indexing issues with .online and .one domains. have you noticed this? .xyz seems to be fine! They’re also really cheap which is a huge plus.
Dear Jeff Schneider of said Contact Group Metal Tiger,Former Rockefeller IBEC Marketing Ananalyst/Strategist, Licensed CBOE Commodity Hedge trimmer Strategist…
There could be nothing more “quasi” than repeatedly signing off with untenable brands and a CV. Are you blog spam job hunting?

Keep up the good work XYZ
Well, I know you have a reason to like .xyz domains. Still, I share your feelings and registered quite a lot from this tld. We are testing several sites and I have to say our results are promising. Maybe the best example is a collection of sad quotes running on sadquotes.xyz, which is growing week by week and has already over 200 daily visitors without any promotion. So good luck to your xyz business, I hope you will be right!
Zsolt: did you mean with without any promotion really? does that mean packed domain? or what do you really mean?
Not parked of course, it has content. I mean that I have reached this level without seo efforts, adwords, social promotion, etc. Just built the content, that’s all, no time and money spent on marketing. And I get exact match keyword traffic.
Let’s see how much influence the different TLDs’ lobbies will have on Google’s algorithms…
Interesting read, I exclusively do blackhat and have for a number of years. This allows me to do quite a lot of mathematical testing and pure luke for like. I also operate with huge numbers and similar content, all the things we are not supposed to do but it gives me a volume of data to work with which most people would not have access to.
Looking at xyz, they seem to index at a similar rate as other tld, however, so far (and it’s early days for me) it seems they get slightly less geo targeted traffic vs traditional geo domains even when you give the right signals to the engines….
For example of 6 million pages across 1000 domains on xyz, even when setting the location as gb and hosting on a UK IP 70% of traffic is UK based whereas a clone of this project across co.uk and org.uk domains shows 85% UK traffic….
I’m going to give it a shot. I see the xyz domains are going for under $2.00 in some cases so it’s really not much of a risk to do a little SEO test.
I’m interested to see how fast it gets indexed, I’ll post my findings.
Interesting article, we’ve been contemplating the switch to XYZ and from our research thus far it appears to rank just as well as dot coms.
