.XYZ is the Next .COM – BELIEVE IT
Posted by Daniel Negari in Featured, gTLDs
Tomorrow, June 2nd, 2014, will be remembered as the day that the internet evolved and every generation of internet users were unified. My vision for an affordable, truly generic, and open namespace that I had years ago will finally come to fruition.
Since the beginning of the internet, there has always been a need for a generic domain extension that has never been fulfilled. Let’s look at some of the most popular domain extensions: .com, .net, and .org. .com is meant for commercial enterprises, .net is meant for networks, and .org is for organizations.
Where is the extension that has no connotation or meaning that can be used by anyone, anywhere, for any purpose?
Four years ago, I had a dream of creating the .xyz domain extension. Although the letters “XYZ” have little-to-no meaning, everyone in the world has used and seen “XYZ” at some point in their lives. So what is .xyz? .xyz is whatever you want it to be. It’s a totally customizable domain extension for Every Website, Everywhere.™ It’s the platform for people all over the world to develop a memorable and meaningful online presence, regardless of their industry or interests.
Think about .xyz.
Now keep thinking.
Now try and forget it. I dare you. Just like I dared 10 million people who listened to me on NPR. And guess what? You can’t forget it. It is the ending of the alphabet, and it is the ending of domain names. It’s instinctive. It’s natural. It makes sense.
After you’ve read this, ask someone else what they think of .xyz as the next .com. And ask them to think of a more intuitive ending to a domain name. And challenge them to try to forget it.
Could they forget it? Could YOU forget it? If you could, please post your comments below and I will address them.
You read it here first – .xyz will be the biggest and fastest growing new domain extension. It is the next .com for the next generation of internet users all over the world.
A brief history
Let’s go back to the year 1985. What happened that year? For starters I was born: Daniel M Negari (DMN). What else happened? The first .com was registered. And it took until 1994 for .com domain names to actually be used for commercial purposes. Then it took another five years and several million registrations for it to popularize in 1999. Fast forward to 2014 and there are approximately three million domains registered every month.
Over 250 million domain names are now registered in the world and 113 million of them end in .com. With 5 billion new internet users coming online in the next decade, plus the significant advancements in mobile technology, this number is continuing to grow at a RAPID pace. The revolution is coming – and there is a need for a short, affordable, and universal ending to domain names that allow individuals to express themselves online.
Why didn’t I choose another extension?
So why not .web or .online? Aren’t those obvious generic domain strings that everyone will want to register? Maybe 20 years ago. But in 2014 – or 2024 – why would someone get on the web to visit petstore.web? Why would someone go online and then type in email.online? Isn’t that a bit redundant? We are not in the 80’s or 90’s anymore. Both of these terms are outdated and stale – and neither extension is even available yet! There is only one true generic domain extension that exists on the internet right now, and that is .xyz.

Introducing .xyz
Did you know that 99% of all registrar searches today result in a “domain taken” page?
After speaking with some of the top registrars, I have learned their users are very frustrated with the domain registration process. One registrar in particular said their visitors search on average nine times before setting on their tenth choice, resulting in unsightly domain names with numbers and dashes that don’t pass the radio test. This tells us that there is a clear need for additional domain name options, and that is where new extensions fit into the picture.
.com saw its initial growth from the baby boomers and Gen X’ers who were able to register short, desirable domain names. The Gen Y’ers, millennials, and beyond haven’t had this privilege. And why should the older generation be the only ones with a chance to innovate? Where will the next wave of internet entrepreneurs and innovators come from? We deserve the chance to have a short, memorable, and affordable domain name too.
So here comes the contender – .xyz. It is run by me, an aggressive and successful internet marketer, and a sophisticated team made up of Gen Y’ers. And guess who knows how to market to that next generation of internet users who are looking for the first online presence? Us – the Gen Y’ers, the next generation. It’s that simple. Would you rather get your domain names from your grandfather, your father, or from someone that lives and breathes domain names like me?
Even in its early stages, the new gTLD program has already been a huge success, with over 850,000 new gTLD domain names registered in the first four months. This bodes extremely well for .xyz, which we have positioned at a significantly lower price point for a worldwide market.
There is no doubt in my mind that the growth rate of .xyz will surpass the growth rate of .com. It won’t take us 20 years to reach one million registrations. It will only take 1 year. The growing number of internet users online today, the increasing demand for domain name registrations, and the way we have positioned .xyz all validate this projection. Soon we will see that there is only one competitor to .com, and that is .xyz.

There are a lot of skeptics. But have you seen the EuroDNS homepage lately? The registrars, the media, and the registrants are all on board. I’m going all in on .xyz with a multi-million dollar budget and one of the largest distribution channels of over 200 registrars. Our team is quickly growing, and I have the pleasure of working with the most talented and innovative individuals in the domain world.

How can you benefit from .xyz?
Investors, you’ve been put on notice. Like the modern .com, .xyz is an unrestricted extension meant for every use. And unlike other registry operators, we have reserved only a few thousand domain names while skipping the variable pricing and shady tactics. With plenty of premium domain names left to choose from for under $10 per year, a .xyz portfolio is a great investment. You are investing in the future of the internet and you are getting in on the ground floor. Use our domain name generator or Click here to download a list of the top 5,000 domains that are still available for registration at the time of this post. Most of these domain names will probably be taken within the first 30 seconds of our general availability, which begins at 9am PDT tomorrow, so I recommend that you preregister your favorite domains now.
In case you missed the link above, here are 5,000 premium domains.
As for personal use, one popular application I have heard is custom email addresses, such as [email protected]. I predict that the majority of YourName.xyz domains will be taken within a few months, so I recommend registering your FirstName.xyz and LastName.xyz now. Beyond personalized email addresses, .xyz domains may be used for personal websites, programming projects, blogs, stores, startups, or even redirection purposes. .xyz is whatever you make it.
Final thoughts
Many of my readers may not be aware of my track record or the success I have had. However, those that have done business with me or know me personally know that I am ultra-progressive and am typically dead-on in my predictions. And despite having transacted over $100 million in domain name sales in the aftermarket while still controlling one of the strongest .com portfolios, I am going all-in on .xyz. While I believe premium .com domains will continue to appreciate with the prominent usage of the extension for many years to come, I also recognize the value of investing in new internet users and their needs.
.xyz is the future. It is for your kids, your grandkids, and even your great grandkids. Twenty years from now, the internet landscape will be very different than it is today. Everyone already knows that you end the alphabet with “XYZ,” and soon everyone will know that you end a domain name the same way.
.xyz is my gift to the world. You now have a better understanding of my vision and the future of the internet, and this is your chance to be a part of it. You have the opportunity to be one of the early adopters and I urge you to take advantage of your newfound knowledge. You heard it straight from the source.
Warmly Yours,
D
A few shout outs
Frank Schilling – I admire you a great deal – you are one of the most progressive CEO’s I know. Keep up the great work.
Rick Schwartz – I admire you as well, you went from being totally against new gTLDs to having one of the largest new gTLD portfolios. Interesting how perspectives change.
Morgan Linton – you get it. Everyone should closely observe up-and-comers like Morgan as a model for success. I am calling him out as one of the next great entrepreneurs.
Andrew Rosener – check. The future is in believers. Your future is in your control.
Mike Berkens – A reformed believer, I see you buying new gTLDs. I think you are wise and I admire you.
And to the people who don’t get it – I will leave you out of this post directly. I know there are lots of you out there – I get your emails, phone calls, and death threats. Don’t worry, I am not going to completely destroy the value of your assets. Your premium .com domains are safe. But that 3, 4, or 5 word .com? Upgrade to the .xyz immediately. I am doing you a favor.
All of the comments above are my views, not that of my company. ceo.xyz is a place for me to express my opinions. Have something to add? Please post in the comments section below.
800,000 registrations! Those numbers are irrelevant. How many different registrants were their? 1000 people with 800 registrations would not impress me, 200,000 people buying these new gtlds would. Nice if you knew those numbers.
That number is completely relevant. How many people have 100,000 .com domain names; or 300,000 .com domain names? Many…. How long did it take for .com to get to 1 Million domain names as a whole – 15 years? It has been 4 months and the new gTLD program is just starting. It will hit over 1 Million domain names THIS MONTH.
Hundreds of thousands of people have bought new gTLD’s – check the zone files.
New gtlds are a cheap alternative to the .com you want but can’t afford.
Right? Right. (We are talking about now, Not one of the endless number of possibilities in the future.
I agree when you said ” But that 3, 4, or 5 word .com? Upgrade…. ” SEO is no longer a bunch of relevant keywords jammed into a nonsensical sounding domain name.
I think their could be huge market for .xyz with companies wanting to target users under 14.
Too many of you are Holding back a thousands of keywords, Which means I won’t get my first 10 choices and a 2 keyword new gtld is just as bad as a 3 keyword .com.
The good thing about XYZ is that it is generic and unlike many new TLDs it will work with pretty much any keyword. It also seems to be set up without the premium acquisition cost or renewals of many of the other new TLDs. Consequently, with enough marketing it may surprise some old school domain investors. However, reserved names continue to be an issue. If one promotes an extension as get the name you always wanted but the name you want isn’t available, then what conclusion does one draw? True, keyword availability may be more plentiful in XYZ than extensions where only a limited number of keywords make sense. However, the question remains – why should a domain investor who has already seen the challenges of trying to market solid keywords in more established extensions to end users invest in XYZ? If I buy Fitness.XYZ but have no intention to develop it, then who is going to buy it from me when there will be many other generic TLDs available in the coming months? I believe it would be a hard sell at least for the next several years. As someone else commented, perhaps I can wait five years but I don’t have a twenty-year time horizon for a domain holding when who knows what the internet landscape will look like in twenty years.
Regardless, I can sense your enthusiasm and wish you well with your launch.
These are some misleading facts, I am sorry just like .xyz means whatever, it also means nothing. .com is $8.50 how much more affordable can you get?
The next .com? So somebody wants to start a site:
.com
.net
.web
etc.
.xyz ? 3 syllables vs. 1 for the others.
And this:
“Rick Schwartz – I admire you as well, you went from being totally against new gTLDs to having one of the largest new gTLD portfolios. Interesting how perspectives change.”
Did you not read thedomains.com? That post makes it seems like he’s supporting you in some way, when he just posted this about your extension and more:
“And that s why it is hard to take an extension like .xyz very seriously.”
“What is the coherent argument to invest in .xyz??? ”
That’s not support.
.xyz Sounds good, I dont think it will eever surpass Dot Com as No1
.com took 15 years to reach 1mm registrations because the market was non-existent before that.
Other tlds – cctlds included – took a lot less time, .co only took 1 year afaik.
But success for the registry does not equate to success for the registrant.
People will buy anything, even things that they don’t need.

Daniel,
i wish you success in this journey first of all.
but i have some objections to your article.yes many people can speak english but xyz is not the ending in many alphabets including mine (turkish).so thats not true.
memorable ? yes.but not more than .net or . web.
in my opinion i would choose .web if not .net to .xyz as a turkish citizen.
i hate to say something negative to an entrepreneur but keep this in record.this name wont be the next .com.no chance to be global.
No, thanks.
Put me on the “people who don’t get it” list.
And it has nothing to do with New gTLDs as I probably own more than Mike or Rick.
Daniel, good luck, get back to me in 1 year and see how the numbers look, see if there is a resale market. All the talk, past success makes no difference, just numbers, see what happens. Love your spirit, good luck!
I just don’t see it, sorry. I like .college better.
There appears to be a moderately strong correlation between the number of global exact match searches a month for the keyword and the number of registrations that the gTLD gets. The top five gTLDs get the following global exact match searches a month on Google: club 368,000; guru 201,000; berlin 1,000,000; photography 450,000.
Much lower in registrations and also lower in global exact match searches are: systems 12,100; international 135,000; training 165,000.
XYZ receives only 74,000 global exact match searches a month. I believe the number of registrations you get will be some factor of the number of global exact match searches.
You made some pretty bold statements there (.xyz being the next .com, surpassing 1 million registration in one year,…).
My bold statements:
–> .xyz will have less than 25,000 registrations at the end of the year.
–> As soon as .web comes out it will surpass the total amount of .xyz registrations within the first 1-2 months of general availability.
–> Most people registering .xyz domains will be newbie domain investors, kids and college students who want a novelty email address. No serious company or business will ever want an .xyz domain. In other words there will be no end-users (wanting to pay end-user prices) for .xyz domains acquired by domain investors. Unless your goal is to sell a $15 .xyz domain for $15 you’re not going to be able to sell them.
–> Whatever the next best thing to .com will be, it sure won’t be .xyz (actually this one is not a bold statement, it’s a realistic one).
I’ll pass on this extension, thanks. Good luck to you though.
So, seems you may have miss calculated .xyz’s future a bit so far since 2014. No one can tell the future. AS we all know now, Google owns abc.xyz. in use for their new start-up company “Alpha-Bet”. We all do our best at hoping for or against any one thing. IN this case your hope was for .xyz to fail. My guess is as good as yours and I say .xyz will succeed in many respects beyond our expectations…starting Dec 16, 2016, start watching daily registrations for .xyz. Will we be amazed??? Best to ya!
Hello. In my opinion, .xyz is the only suitable new gtld for a one word domain name, just like .com. For example, business.com means business. business.xyz also means business. business.club means business club. Furthermore, by Google buying a .xyz domain name for its parent company, Alphabet, it has boosted the popularity of the tld which is good because good one word .com names are gone and will be expensive to buy from current owners and the next best alternative is certainly .xyz, just because .xyz has no meaning which is the reason that makes it great for one word domain names. I wish .xyz will grow and be known to everyone around the world in the coming years. Good luck!
“That number is completely relevant. How many people have 100,000 .com domain names; or 300,000 .com domain names? Many…. How long did it take for .com to get to 1 Million domain names as a whole – 15 years? It has been 4 months and the new gTLD program is just starting. It will hit over 1 Million domain names THIS MONTH.”
There are currently over 113 million .COM domains registered and this number is growing by 60,000+ per day ( http://www.statdns.com/ ).
Sure there are some domain investors which have over 100,000 .COM domain names just by themselves but that doesn’t take away the fact that there are easily 5-10 million UNIQUE .COM registrants. That’s a LOT of potential end-users and a huge resale market.
Now let’s compare this with the new gTLDs. There’s around 890,000 new gTLDs registered in about 4 months. But sadly that’s the grand total of all of the new gTLDs registrations combined together (890,000 registrations spread over 275 extensions, basically an average of only 3,236 registrations per new gTLD).
Source: ntldstats.com/tld
Those numbers are pathetic…
I would actually love to see some developed domains on the new gTLDs. Out of 890,000 registration you would expect to see at least a few hundred developed (or soon to be developed) domains? Obviously that’s not the case since almost all new gTLD registrations were done by domain investors who either have their new gTLD domains parked, with a landing page or their domains are simply not resolving.
No end-users means no resale market. So as a domain investor, if you’re planning to invest in the new gTLDs, imo only the best ones will have a slight chance at succeeding in the long run (and for most .xyz isn’t even close to the best).
Very ugly domain extension. I’d rather .etc (makes more sense) ! Would you please quit coming up with extensions and work instead on other ways to make money online. How about selling Marijuana seeds?!! Please, give us a break.
You should run for public office — you spin this shit better than all the other money-grabbing new gTLD holders. Ah, well have fun while you can…that’s what I say…
I personally like the pure generic nature of .XYZ and the fact that it comes with no pretense and no expectation. I personally don’t see it having high commercial value, meaning it won’t likely be adopted by IBM or General Motors, but I do believe that it will be popular with the young generation and will be very fitting for anything which is social, pop-culture, trendy, edgy & culture related – particularly among the 15 years – 30 years old demographic.
We have not been investing much, if anything, into new gTLDs but we did make an investment into .XYZ names and I’m confident it will pay off.
So far confirmed, we acquired the following from Landrush:

Nice niche list Andrew. I missed out on some first names.
I’m a great believer in .xyz and can see it going a long way.
I haven’t invested greatly, but below are the first gTLD’s I’ve bought thus far;
MEGA.xyz
ultra.xyz
graphene.xyz
howie.xyz
.xyzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Anyone notice where the keys are for .xyz? Not exactly premium spots.
I do commend you for keeping prices in line and playing maybe the only fair game in town when it comes to new TLDs. Good for you.
I don’t know about taking over .com but I think you’ll find your way into the domain ecosystem like all the other previous extensions have. Each has their role to play.
I’m looking forward to seeing the numbers from today. Most of the best one word options were scooped up in the first few minutes. I still managed to find a couple of gems though.
As for domain names, xyz is the best way to indicate the rarified content of the site it is associated with.
Hard to convince the public otherwise…
A major part of any new gTLD success is based on how it is marketed to the masses.
.Co did a great job so lessons to be learned there.
Big goals and ambitions but if there is a team that will pull it off I’d bet on Dan and co.
There is no such thing as bad publicity so this is a brilliant article to kick off your launch. I’m not thinking .xyz is capable of being investment grade but that doesn’t mean it won’t be successful. It’s definitely “cool” and young people should like it.
I love your passion and the fact you are out promoting your extension. That puts you above 99% of the rest. Best of luck.
ok daniel im in. becuase of your passion and effort… i think having the accountable face of a tld is worth a lot to me. In other words ill take an extension that may not mean much, run by a warrior, over a nice sounding tld thats just let out to pasture, and hopes the registrars somehow distinquish it from the other 1400, get innovative, let me know if i can help.
were in with about 60.
GO FOR IT! rest later, help us build the brand if you can, if your like me youve probably been thinking about this for years, get risky, try some new things.
page howe
What about .abc .pdq .wqx??? How is this better or more memorable? All I think of is “examine your zipper” when I hear this random string of letters. I think your fly is down on this one. Good luck…
My perception of the new gTLDs, is similar to how you search for things. You first need a category. Many of the gTLDs have a category in mind. It will take time, but when you type in a subject, it will be likely that your search will return items from relative categories. If your business model is Google’s, then you love how this works. New gTLDs mean more searches… more successful searches and that leads to more profits from those searches.
Now with .xyz you have novel and fun approach to becoming popular with a very important demographic of internet users, 15 to 30. I bought names with that in mind.
And I’m wearing my .xyz t-shirts with pride ;)
We really believe that this domain might help. For us it worked as we wanted the name mydog. So we were able to aquire mydog.xyz. Going further, yes, its true that lots of our users asked us: whats that? Is it a child play, is it like xxx? Anyway, in the end they all remembered, mydog and xyz. So we were able to have a great name for what we do and a controversed domain. Good job Daniel!
For all the naysayers. I’d point out that Google just purchased abc.xyz and changed all their stocks over to Alphabet which is technically part of their new name even though they’ll still use Google.
The point is if Google is on board it’s just a matter of time before other companies follow.
Not just becaue of google’s alphabet, but the domain really feels ‘catchy’ by itself. I’ve seen a huge amount of domain names bought in a really short time. I was looking a domain for my new website, and was like couldn’t decide between 2 or three domain names with xyz extension. when I checked tomorrow, only one was left available so I hurried up and bought this one for my mobile games website.
I don’t know if it makes a difference, comparing to com, but it’s hard to find it on google, because there are so many other ‘xyz’ domain from the same niche.
xyz market is become really huge !
Hello. In my opinion, .xyz is the only suitable new gtld for a one word domain name, just like .com. Hi Daniel,
I was very excited about buying xyz domains for the first time on 2nd of june and after searching i found onlydomains.com and registered 69 domains n paid for it. I got the mail from them that due to huge no. of orders it will take time to register them and they asked for id verification which they said the do with all. I didnt get response from them and next day was saturday, no mail n registration on saturday and sunday only on tuesday they told that they have rejected the order due to some reason and they told to order again at new price.
You know some of the good domains got registered in that time which was very dissapointing experience for me.
Wow….look how things turned out. I absolutely believe it’s a great investment and have 65 domains to my name….hehehe.
Well done Daniel
